Something smaller.
Something closer.

Dan Millwright-Hughes
Founder, AmongFolk · London

After years building and leading engineering teams in telecoms and fintech, Dan wanted to make something more personal: a place for the people already in your life.

AmongFolk is independently built and bootstrapped in London. Choosing not to take external funding means the product can grow around relationships, with staying close as the purpose.

It’s a deliberate shift from technology at scale to the small things worth keeping. The Sunday photos. The next plan. A voice you haven’t heard in a while.

“Group chats are brilliant for what’s happening in the next five minutes. They’re much less good at remembering last Sunday.”

Short description

AmongFolk is a private social app for people who already know one another: families, friends, clubs and communities. It gives each group a shared home for everyday updates, photos, plans, recommendations and memories, without public profiles, adverts, follower counts or algorithmic feeds. Built and bootstrapped in London.

Longer description

AmongFolk is a private social app for the people you already know. Built around existing relationships, it gives families, friends, clubs and real-life communities an invitation-only place to share everyday life.

Photos, videos and voice notes sit alongside events, recommendations, albums and shared lists. Private guestbooks bring everyone’s birthday messages together. Recurring check-ins make room for a proper answer, and a weekly email catch-up helps people keep up at their own pace.

It’s a home for the things that disappear in busy group chats: the recipe, the restaurant recommendation, the weekend photos and the plan for next time. Posts appear chronologically, with no public profiles, follower counts, adverts or public discovery.

AmongFolk is independently built and bootstrapped in London, without external funding. Groups can start for free, and paid plans cover the group. People who are invited don’t need to buy their own subscription.

AmongFolk offers a free year of Plus to established clubs, teams and social groups

The bootstrapped London app invites real-world groups of 30 or more to apply for twelve months of Plus, with no card required and no automatic renewal.

AmongFolk, the private social app for people who already know one another, is offering a year of Plus at no cost to eligible clubs, teams, neighbourhoods and friend groups.

The offer gives approved groups a private place to share everyday updates, keep photos together and organise their next get-together. One person applies and hosts the group, and everyone they invite can join without purchasing their own subscription.

Applications are open to established real-world groups of at least 30 people. The group does not need to have 30 people using AmongFolk already: it can start with whoever is ready to join. Applicants must be at least 18 and the age of majority where they live. Families, businesses and brands are not eligible for this offer.

Each application is reviewed individually. Organisers are asked to describe their group and provide a public link, such as a club website or social page, with an explanation of where its size can be checked. They should not upload files or supply other people’s personal details. Meeting the size threshold does not guarantee approval.

Plus covers one group, with space for up to 100 people and 50 GB of shared storage. It adds voice notes, shared albums, date polls and recurring plans, alongside the photos, videos, one-off events, shared notes and lists available to every group. The offer is designed to help existing groups keep the practical arrangements and the memories in one place.

For a sports team, that might mean keeping match photos alongside the next fixture. For a book club, it could mean choosing the next read and finding a date everyone can make. A neighbourhood group can keep plans, useful notes and photos together, within its own invitation-only space.

To apply, an organiser completes the form at https://amongfolk.com/for-groups and confirms their email address using the link sent to them. AmongFolk then reviews the application and emails the outcome. Approved applicants use that same email address for their AmongFolk account, create a group and redeem the offer through You → Plans & billing in the app.

The twelve months begin when the offer is redeemed, not when the application is submitted or approved. There is one free year per email address, covering one group. No payment card is required, and the offer does not become a paid subscription when the year ends.

After the free year, new use of Plus features stops unless someone chooses to cover the group. The AmongFolk terms explain what remains available. Organisers can read the current eligibility details and apply at https://amongfolk.com/for-groups.

AmongFolk is independently built and bootstrapped in London without external funding. It is designed around existing relationships, with invitation-only groups, chronological feeds, no public profiles or discovery, and no advertising.

AmongFolk launches a private social app built for the people you already know

Bootstrapped London startup takes a different approach to social networking, replacing followers, algorithms and strangers with private spaces for real-life groups

AmongFolk is a new private social app for families, friendship groups, clubs and other real-life communities.

Built and bootstrapped in London without external funding, AmongFolk starts with a deliberately different idea from most social networks: the people you most want to hear from are probably already in your life.

Rather than encouraging people to accumulate followers or discover strangers, AmongFolk gives existing groups a private home for the everyday things that can easily disappear into busy group chats: photos from Sunday, a voice note from a friend, plans for the next get-together, a family recipe or the restaurant somebody recommended six months ago.

There are no public profiles, follower counts or algorithmically ranked feeds. Posts appear in the order they were shared and groups can only be joined through a private invitation.

Founder Dan Millwright-Hughes said:

“We’ve become incredibly good at staying loosely connected to hundreds of people, but it can still be surprisingly difficult to keep up properly with the people we actually care about.

“I wanted AmongFolk to feel much more like having a room of your own with your favourite people in it. You don’t need to perform for an audience, build a following or wonder why an algorithm is showing you something. It’s just your folk.”

After years leading engineering teams in technology and fintech, Dan started building AmongFolk independently in London.

The company has taken no external investment and has been bootstrapped from the beginning.

Dan said:

“There’s something quite deliberate about building AmongFolk this way.

“A lot of consumer technology is built around the question of how quickly it can acquire users and maximise engagement. We’re trying to build around a rather different question: does this actually make it easier for a group of people who already care about one another to stay close?

“Being bootstrapped means we can be very clear about what we want the product to become and, just as importantly, what we don’t want it to become.”

AmongFolk brings together several parts of group life that typically end up scattered across messaging apps, photo libraries, calendars and notes.

Members can share photos, videos and everyday updates, reply and react to one another, organise get-togethers and RSVPs, create shared lists, save recommendations, collect photos into albums and preserve things such as recipes, traditions and birthday messages.

The app also includes features intended to encourage groups to stay connected without demanding constant attention. Groups can answer recurring check-in questions, receive a weekly email catch-up, revisit old posts through “On this day”, and create private guestbooks that are revealed to the recipient on a birthday or other occasion.

Dan added:

“Group chats are brilliant for what’s happening in the next five minutes. They’re much less good at remembering last Sunday.

“A photo from a family lunch, the recipe somebody shared, the plan for Christmas or a voice note from someone you love shouldn’t have to disappear beneath another hundred messages.

“We’re deliberately building AmongFolk around relationships rather than engagement metrics. The aim isn’t to make you spend more time in the app. It’s to make staying close to your people a little easier.”

Privacy is central to the product. Groups are invitation-only, there is no public people search or content discovery, and AmongFolk does not carry advertising.

The service can be started for free. One person creates a group and everyone they invite can join without purchasing their own subscription. Paid plans give the group additional features and storage while continuing to cover the people invited into it.

AmongFolk is aimed at a broad range of existing groups, from new parents sharing everyday moments with grandparents living elsewhere, to friendship groups spread across different cities, book clubs, sports teams and other communities that already know one another.

The company is also beginning to work directly with established clubs, parent groups and community organisations, allowing organisers to create an AmongFolk space for their members without requiring individual members to purchase a subscription.
